What are you celebrating today?

For those of you in the U.S., Happy 4th of July! Proudly wearing my "Bill of Rights" shirt. I think my next purchase from one of my favorite stores, CafePress.com, is going to be this button:

Kudos to the men and women who have fought for our freedom and independence to this point - cheers to all of you out there who still believe in it.

  1. That's not the actual quote, you know.

"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. " -- 1775

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -- 1759

"Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power." -- 1738

Kinda funny that you're posting that quote, especially the paraphrased version that makes it more extreme than his intent... lately it's mostly been used (and accurately) in reference to idiocies like the TSA and warrantless wiretapping.

  2. I wasn't quoting the quote. Just linking to a product I want to buy. :)

Thanks for pointing this out - it is often misquoted.

That said I don't see freedom/security and liberty/safety are all that different. However with all that's being done to all four these days semantics is the least of our worries!
